Got a CP14? Here's What It Means and What to Do Next

A CP14 is usually the first bill the IRS sends when it shows a balance due on your account. It lists the amount owed and a pay-by date, and interest and penalties usually keep adding until the balance is paid. Reminder notices such as CP501 and CP503 often follow if it stays unpaid.

We help with IRS notices, unfiled returns and audits.

What This Notice Usually Means

A balance-due notice: the IRS shows a balance due for the year listed. It shows the amount, the tax period, and a pay-by date. Read those 3 items on your own letter.

Urgency: Earlier than reminder notices such as CP501 and CP503. The date on the notice still matters.

What Happens Next

A calm path — your letter controls the details.

1
Read your letter
Confirm the amount, tax year, and pay-by date printed.
2
Identify the issue
Is the bill correct, already paid, or a different amount than you expected?
3
Choose a path
Pay, set up a payment plan, call the number on the notice if you disagree, or use the IRS Notice Decoder.

Deadlines & What You Can Do

Use the pay-by date printed on your own CP14. Addressing the balance, or questioning a bill you think is wrong, is usually easier before later reminder and collection letters.

  1. Confirm the notice number, tax year, amount, and any payment you already made.
  2. Compare the amount with your return and your IRS account.
  3. If you can pay in full, paying by the date on the notice generally avoids further interest on that amount.
  4. If you cannot pay in full, the IRS offers payment plans; IRS.gov explains how to apply.
  5. If you disagree, call the number in the IRS Help section of the notice and have your records ready.
  6. If unfiled years are also part of the picture, that can change the next step.
  7. Crop Social Security numbers from any photos you share.

When a written review may help: unclear balance, multiple years, unfiled returns, or you cannot tell a first bill from later reminder or levy-path letters. Start with the IRS Notice Decoder, or get a written review of your notice ($249).
