Balance due · Reminder notice Got a CP501? Here's What It Means and What to Do Next |
A CP501 is usually a reminder that a balance on your tax account is still unpaid. The IRS sends it when it has not received payment or a response to the previous notice, such as a CP14. It shows the amount, the due date and your payment options.

A reminder that a balance is still unpaid. Read the amount, the tax year and the due date on your own notice.
Urgency: The due date on the notice matters. If the balance stays open and the IRS hears nothing from you, it can file a notice of federal tax lien, and interest and penalties continue to apply.
A calm path — your letter controls the details.
1 Read the notice Confirm the amount, the tax year and the due date printed on it. | 2 Check the balance Already paid? A different amount than you expected? Contact the IRS if so. | 3 Choose a next step Pay, ask about a payment plan, call the number on the notice if you disagree, or use the IRS Notice Decoder. |

Use the due date printed on your own CP501. Addressing the balance, or questioning an amount you think is wrong, is usually easier before later collection letters.
When a written review may help: the amount is unclear, more than one year is involved, unfiled returns are involved, or you cannot tell where you are in the unpaid-balance notices. Start with the IRS Notice Decoder, or get a written review of your notice ($249). Questions? Email [email protected].
